Anita Saarkessian
Anita Sarkeesian (Canadian-American) is a feminist media critic also a speaker who is Canadian. She founded Feminist Frequency the site which features video and posts on the representations of women in popular media. Anita Sarkeesian has been a journalist, media critic and award-winning feminist for over 10 years. Feminist Frequency is a non-for profit site for education that investigates female representations in popular stories of culture - was created and directed by Sarkeesian. As well as working to bring awareness to the harassment and targeted attack on women and as well as other minorities, she is committed to breaking down stereotypes that are associated with popular culture. Sarkeesian also holds a York University master's in social philosophy, political and philosophical thinking. Apart from being a well-known public speaker she has made speeches at the TEDxWomen conference and the United Nations Broadband Working Group. Since her early years, Sarkeesian was fascinated with gender issues and feminist thinking. When she was still in school, in 2009 she started her Feminist Frequency Website. A woman with ambitions to start a web-series examining the representation of gender in video games was targeted by an online campaign. The harassment didn't hinder her. The experience only strengthened her as a journalist who is feminist. In recognition of the many contributions she has made to feministism, she's awarded numerous prizes. Anita Sarkeesian is an award winning media critic and the creator of Feminist Frequency an educational non-profit which studies the portrayals of women within pop culture stories.
